Baiji

Baiji population declined dramatically in recent decades as a result of the Chinese industry and because of the use of heavy equipment on the river for fishing, transport, hydropower. Attempts were made to preserve the species, but the end of the 2006 expedition failed to find any baiji in the river. The organizers declared functionally extinct Baiji, which will make the water first mammalian species known to be extinct since the collapse of the Japanese sea lion and the Caribbean monk seal in the 1950s. It also will be the first recorded extinction of a cetacean species studied (it is not clear whether some of the earlier varieties of extinct species or subspecies) be directly attributable to human influence.
